Team Teach Training

Schools / Academies / Trusts can commission Team Teach training from Oak Bank School.

The different training options and costs are shown below.

Oak Bank has 4 trainers that are able to deliver Positive Behaviour Management Level One, Level 2 and Advanced Modules training.

Positive Behaviour Management Level One – 6 Hour

Team Teach Positive Behaviour Management courses provide accredited, award-winning training in the use of de-escalation and basic positive handling strategies for dealing with challenging behaviour. Level One is a 6-hour, one day course in positive behaviour management for those working in low-risk service settings. Training is delivered by experienced instructors and tailored to the specific needs of those taking part.

Participants will gain a detailed understanding of the drivers behind aggressive and disruptive behaviour, and the legal context around behaviour management. It equips participants with strategies of de-escalation, both verbal and non-verbal, for dealing with challenging behaviour. And it teaches simple and safe positive handling techniques, appropriate for a low-risk environment. Crucially, all techniques are situated within a respectful, supportive approach to behaviour management which maintains positive relationships. This course will equip individuals with a good understanding of the values and philosophy of the Team Teach approach.

The course will also cover documentation and legal guidance, as well as best practice when reporting and reviewing incidents. Everything will be delivered across an invigorating day that is fun whilst also serious, and focused on developing team-work, co-operation and morale.

Who is this course for?

Anyone who is operating in a low-risk service setting would benefit from this course, which offers a grounding in positive behaviour management strategies applicable across environments. This would include those working in:

▪ Mainstream schools (primary or secondary)
▪ Adult learning
▪ Children’s hospitals
▪ Elderly care

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this course, a participant will be able to fully understand the rationale and principles of theTeam Teach approach.

Participants will be fully aware of which strategies are most appropriate for any given situation, and will have a far deeper understanding of the causes of disruptive behaviour.

They will be equipped with the expertise and confidence to stay safe, to carry out simple de-escalation strategies, and to apply basic positive handling, mostly focused on guiding and escorting service users.

This course is organised into 8 modules:

Module 1 – Background to Team Teach
Module 2 – The Legal Framework
Module 3 – Understanding Aggression
Module 4 – How Feelings Drive Behaviours
Module 5 – De-escalation and De-fusion
Module 6 – Personal Safety
Module 7 – Positive Handling – mainly guiding and escorting safely*
Module 8 – Repair, Reflection and Review

* If a greater degree of holding is required, please refer to the Level Two – 12 Hour course.

Delivery and Cost:

Positive Behaviour Management Level One can be delivered in one day or through twilight’s e.g. 3 x 2 hours or 2 x 3 hours). Accreditation lasts for 3 years.

When a school is commissioning the training themselves, they can agree with the trainer the practical elements that will benefit their service setting best.

If the school is commissioning the training themselves, the costs are as shown below:

For training that takes place at the commissioning school i.e. we come to you the costs for the course are:
1-12 attendees: £600 (delivered by 1 Senior Tutor)
13 – 24 attendees £1,000 (delivered by two tutors)
24-36 attendees £1,200 (delivered by three tutors)

All course materials are included in the cost.

Positive Behaviour Management Level Two – 12 Hour

Positive Behaviour Management Level Two is a two-day course designed to deliver proven, safe strategies for anyone managing challenging behaviour in medium-risk settings. It provides an understanding of the causes of challenging behaviour, along with respectful, supportive and practical strategies for de-escalation and crisis intervention. All techniques that we teach are situated within an approach to behaviour management which seeks to minimise the need for physical intervention and maintain positive relationships.

Aimed at individuals who support people with documented special needs or challenging behaviours, and who may pose a risk to themselves or others, the course will provide a thorough grounding in practical behaviour management strategies. It will equip individuals with a sophisticated understanding of challenging behaviour, and the social and legal context around its management. It will cover strategies of personal safety, team work and de-escalation, as well as teaching effective positive handling techniques: these include guiding, escorting
and safe holding in various positions.

The course will also cover documentation and legal guidance, as well as best practice when reporting and reviewing incidents. Everything will be delivered across an invigorating day that is fun whilst also serious, and focused on developing team work, co-operation and morale.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for individuals operating in a medium-risk environment and is ideal for those working in:

▪ Pupil Referral Units
▪ Special schools
▪ Adult learning
▪ Children’s homes
▪ Health and elderly care

It is particularly aimed at those working with individuals whose behaviour foreseeably poses a risk to themselves or to others.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this course, a participant will be able to fully understand the rationale and principles of the Team Teach approach, and will learn the use of positive handling as part of a holistic approach to managing behaviour.

They will be equipped with the expertise and confidence to stay safe, to carry out simple de-escalation strategies, and to apply positive handling to restrain and make safe individuals who pose a risk to others or to themselves.

Participants will understand the importance of targeted communication, both verbal and non-verbal.

They will be equipped with a range of physical techniques, and will therefore be able to apply a commensurate response to challenging behaviour.

They will gain knowledge and understanding of relevant legal standards and expectations related to use of force, and of the reporting, recording, monitoring and evaluating requirements of incidents involving physical controls and reasonable force.

This course is organised into 8 modules:

Positive Behaviour Management Advanced Modules

Positive Behaviour Management Advanced Modules are designed for individuals who are currently certified in a Level Two – 12 Hour course and working in challenging, high-risk service settings such as Special Schools, Pupil Referral Units (PRUs), Secure Units, children’s homes or elderly care. It provides strategies to ensure personal safety and the reduction of threat, and equips individuals with positive handling techniques which are appropriate in response to extreme, aggressive behaviour. It also helps individuals to respond appropriately, confidently and safely to any incident. Like every closed course we offer, it is tailored to the
specific needs of our participants.

The course focuses on delivering techniques designed for managing extreme and dangerous behaviour. As well as covering personal safety and strategies to reduce risk, the course will equip individuals with a wide range of safe and authorised physical restraint techniques. Advanced safe holding, the management of fights, and the response to everyday objects deployed as weapons are all thoroughly covered.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for individuals operating in high-risk environments, who expect to encounter extreme or complex challenging behaviour. Practitioners working in the following settings will find this course especially beneficial:

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this course, a participant will be able to fully understand the rationale and principles of the Team Teach approach, and will understand the use of physical restraint as part of a holistic approach to managing behaviour.

They will be able to confidently apply a range of physical restraint and handling strategies, and will have the knowledge to help choose the appropriate response every time.

Participants will understand the importance of risk reduction and de-escalation, both verbal and non-verbal, and will be equipped with positive handling expertise to maintain a safe response in a wide range of highrisk environments.

This course includes content covering:
▪ Advanced Ground Holds
▪ Ground Fights and Assaults
▪ Transport
▪ Everyday Objects Used as Weapons

Delivery and Cost:

Positive Behaviour Management Advanced Modules can be delivered in one day or through twilight’s e.g. 2 x 3-hour twilight’s). Accreditation lasts for 1 year.

If a school is looking for staff to be refreshed in either of the above courses, the refresher is half of the timings and cost for the original course.

The school also runs ‘open’ Foundation courses every half term which are held at The Academy of Central Bedfordshire. These courses are advertised in Central Essentials. There will be another open course running during the next half term.
